美 농무장관에 대한 미국인들의 시각

에드 샤퍼 미 농무부 장관이 다우너(Downer, 못 일어나 광우병 의심소) 도축 완전금지 요구에 대해 묵묵부답하거나 기존의 규칙만 잘 따르면 국민건강에 문제가 없다고 해 비난을 받고 있다고 미 캘리포니아 지역의 한 언론(The Press-Enterprise)이 지난달 29일 보도한 바 있습니다.

이보다 앞서 2월29일자 워싱턴포스트(WP)도 'USDA Rejects 'Downer' Cow Ban'이란 제목으로 비슷한 보도를 했는데 눈여겨볼 만한 대목이 있습니다. 샤퍼 농무장관은 당시 미 상원세출 관련 청문회에서 "I do believe there are cases where downer animals can be approved by the veterinarian and put into the food supply," Schafer said. "They are not sick." 라고 밝혔습니다. 즉 다우너를 수의사가 도축 승인할 수 있고 음식용으로 공급될 수 있다고 인정하고 있습니다. 그런데 다우너는 (질병으로) 아픈 것이 아니다라고 말하고 있습니다.

황당한 발언이 아닐 수 없습니다. 에드 샤퍼는 또 5월9일 이런 발언을 했지요. 한국인들의 쇠고기 시위를 개의치 않는다고 했습니다. Meatingplace.com이 'USDA's Schafer Unconcerned About South Korean Beef Protests'란 제목으로 전한 내용은 이렇습니다.

<Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said current protests in South Korea and calls to renegotiate the recent agreement that allows more U.S. beef to enter the market will not stand up against Korean consumer demand for U.S. beef.

Speaking to reporters on a teleconference Friday, Schafer said South Korean grocery chains "can't wait to get American beef," a view he said was confirmed Thursday night when he spoke to a beef producer who just returned from South Korea.>

샤퍼 농무장관. 상당히 '우직'한 것 같습니다. 아니면 우매하거나 말입니다. 노스 다코타 주지사를 2번하고 기업 중역 등을 거친 인물로 올 1월 29대 미 농무장관으로 취임했습니다.

취임 이후 활약이 대단한 것 같습니다. 미국인들이 자국 샤퍼 농무장관에 대해 어떻게 평가를 내리고 있는지 워싱턴포스트(WP) 보도에 대한 댓글을 통해 한번 살펴보겠습니다. 당시 비난이 주류인 논평글이 103개나 올라왔는데 몇개만 간추리겠습니다.
